Pocky – Mousse “Mango Milk”
by Chris on May.21, 2007, under Food, Reviews

I had this for about a week in my cupboard decided to break into it. I found this at the local Asian supermarket, and if you’re a real Pocky fan, you should be able to easily find this as well.
First of all, on the cover in katakana, it says: ムースポッキー/マンゴーミルク. For those of you that can’t read katakana, it really is just “milk pocky/mango milk”. When looking at it, besides the nicely chosen shade of orange, is the new type of packaging. Instead of the typical wide and boisterous look of the traditional pocky packages that you see, this one is slim and thick with a fancy red lift tab to open the box. As always, the packaging shows a nice, tasty picture of the fruit, in this case mango. On the side it says “Lighten up your day with Pocky’s super smooth aero-chocolate.” Now, being basically the only English sentence on the package, I have to say that it was well done. The usual course that most companies would take would be broken English or just interjections or use of dictionary words that you would never imagine could be used as an interjection. A great hand to Glico.

The color scheme of the product is obviously orange. Then they mix it up with black and red with a hint of yellow striping. When opening the box, without the use of the rip-zip method on the other Pocky boxes, you notice the black interior. In some way, it then points your direction down to the smaller packages of Pocky with beige/yellow and orange stripes going down. Again, you see the little slogan of “Lighten up your day…” right on the smaller package. In total, there are three smaller packages of Pocky in the box.

Time to open the smaller package. Like any other Pocky package that I’ve encountered, this one shows where to tear. Usually this never works, but this time it did work and rather easily in fact. Each package has four stick of Pocky inside. The smell of the pocky is great. It smells like the fruity sensation of mango and has the orangish tint.

Upon taking my first bite, I couldn’t quite place the taste. It didn’t taste quite like mango, but after a few more bites, I could finally get the hint of mango. The chocolate and the mango really did mix together in a blend of flavor that could even rival the always good strawberry flavor. The great thing is… NO BAD AFTERTASTE. No great tasting snack should ever leave a bad aftertaste, just that notion of having a bad taste in your mouth after eating something totally negates the whole concept of eating something sweet and pleasing.

After I finished the four in one package I knew that only having 12 sticks total wasn’t enough. For the price and the addictive habit of eating these things, on package should really have at least 24 sticks in it. Or maybe one really large stick with 24 packages around it… wait… it doesn’t work that way.

Gummi 100 MIX
by Chris on Mar.12, 2007, under Food, Reviews

If you haven’t tried this gummy treat, then you are missing out. Gummi 100 MIX is a product by Kasugai, a Japanese candy company. These gummy treats are much like the kinds you can find at the local supermarket. But, don’t let that draw you away from this product. Each piece is individually wrapped into little mint like wrappers. In this variation, there are three different flavors, apple, grape, and Muscat.
To be honest, I found the grape flavor to be much like the flavor you taste in U.S. products. But the apple and Muscat flavors were purely different. Most U.S. products have synthetic flavoring, but Kasugai actually took the real juice of the different fruits and put them into ingredients. So the apple and Muscat flavors truly taste much like a real fruit. The texture of the gummies are also interesting. They are softer and chewier gummy that gives a prolonged chewing time than most gummies you come across. The gummies are also heart shaped, so they are more like a girl’s candy, but it doesn’t mean that a guy can’t enjoy the treat.
I give this product a 7.2 out of 10. Good and also pretty refreshing.
Motenashi Susume no Tamago
by Spartakips on Mar.12, 2007, under Food, Reviews

This snack looks strange from the package, but it is surprisingly good. It is a slightly salty and very crispy peanut snack made by Motenashi. The snack is crispy when you bite into it, but it isn’t too hard or too soft. There is a light salt and peanut taste to it and it isn’t too filling or too light. It’s not perfect, but it’s a good medium.
This would be a good snack to have occasionally and in moderate amounts. You could manage to polish off an entire bag in one sitting, but you will most likely regret it later. I give it a 6.8 out of 10 for an original texture and taste.

This sweet snack has individually wrapped marshmallow puffs. In the center of these puffs, there is a strawberry flavored paste. It’s somewhat dry-tasting and quite sweet, but somewhat good. You probably won’t want to eat more than 3 or 4 in a sitting because they loose their appeal rather quick.
Other than being somewhat unique, there isn’t too much to say about this snack. I give it a 3.7 out of 10 because it’s okay to try, but I wouldn’t recommend.
Purple Sweet Mousse Pocky
by Chris on Mar.12, 2007, under Food, Reviews

The Mousse version of Pocky has to be one of Glico’s best variations of the Pocky brand. The biscuits are much thicker and sport more flavorful icing on the end. The icing is more airy and creaming, thus the “Mousse” name. This particular version of the Mousse variation is has a chocolate biscuit with a cream flavor that I could honestly not place. However, it was more like the vanilla Mousse flavor only with purple coloring and on a chocolate biscuit stick.
I wouldn’t say that I enjoyed this any less than any other version of Pocky that I have tried, but I would say that the interesting box design was what caught my eye. Glico does produce a wonderful flavor, but I couldn’t quite place what it was for the Purple Sweet Mousse Pocky. The Mousse packs only have three little packets inside the box and five stick in each packet. So, the enjoyment is based on how long it takes to eat one stick.
I give this 8.0 out of 10. Tasted like the vanilla Mousse flavor, but it was still good with a neat design on the box.
NongShim Japanese style Udon reviewed
by Royce on Mar.12, 2007, under Food, Reviews
Lemme tell ya, udon is pretty good. It’s even better when it’s made just for you, unlike this stuff. It’s just the average-style udon – only with more of a Korean twist: it’s kinda spicy. Nevertheless, it deserves something of a 7.5 out of 10, just for trying to be what it says.
It’s got just about everything you’d need to make udon: the noodles, the sauce, and a few extras. The noodles, when cooked, are the almost perfect consistency, but the soup itself is just a little spicy.
I found this at a place near my house back home in Chicago; the place was almost brand new, and being at school keeps you away from going to places like this. The store had a ton of Korean and Japanese items, and the bright red on the side of the packaging caught me on the first glance. 7.5 out of 10!
Pocky (Original)
by Chris on Mar.12, 2007, under Food, Reviews
For those people that haven’t heard of Pocky yet. Pocky is a type of biscuit/cookie stick that is covered with a creamy smooth flavored chocolate. There is a variety of flavors ranging from regular chocolate to strawberry. Pocky was made by a Japanese company called Glico. This extremely good treat is popular among the anime otakus in the U.S. and can mostly be found in Asian markets, Suncoast, and online stores. Some may remember from the Nagano Olympics that NBC gave a special TV segment to the tasty morsel.
I personally like the strawberry version of the Original Pocky. Most people get the chocolate flavor, but sometimes the chocolate can be a little off. The vanilla flavor is also quite good. What is great about Pocky is that they leave an amount of space on the biscuit stick where it is bare so your fingers won’t get chocolate on it. But, that wouldn’t matter because the chocolate is hardened on the biscuit. The strawberry flavor of Pocky features little bits of dried strawberries in the chocolate, but there is another version of the original that does not.
I give this food item a 7.7 out of 10. Delightfully good, but they give too few per pack! (Contains sugar so caution for diabetics.)
